Police arrested an East Harlem man after he stabbed his mother to death before setting her apartment on fire Saturday afternoon.
31-year-old David Elias stabbed his 55-year-old mother Ruth Montano multiple times in the torso, according to police. Elias then set her East Harlem apartment on Park Avenue on fire around 4:25 p.m. Montano was taken to Harlem Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Police say Elias also stabbed his 32-year-old brother in the torso and head inside their mother's apartment. The suspect's brother was also taken to Harlem Hospital where has been upgraded from critical to stable condition.
Elias, who lived a few blocks from his mother's apartment, was apprehended by police when he entered the 125th Street -Lexington Avenue subway station shortly after the attack.
Elias has been charged with murder, attempted murder and arson.
