Visitation held for Officer Smiley

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It will be the second funeral for a member of the law enforcement community in the state of Georgia in two days. Officer Richard Halford was laid to rest Friday as visitation for Officer Shawn Smiley began. Both were aboard the Atlanta Police Department helicopter that went down last Saturday.

The pair was in that helicopter last Saturday looking for a runaway child. Officials say the chopper clipped the top of a utility pole and fell to the ground engulfed in flames. Both died in the crash.

The 40-year-old Lithonia man joined the Atlanta Police Department in October 2012. He started with the air unity earlier this year serving as a tactical flight officer.

Smiley is survived by his wife and three children ages 5, 7, and 9 years old.

His funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Atlanta on North Peachtree Road.
