Driver Hurt When UPS Truck, Freight Train Collide In Del.

Posted: Updated:
NEWARK, Del. -

One person has been transported to a hospital after a crash involving a CSX freight train and a UPS tractor-trailer.

The collision occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of West Main Street and Elkton Road.

Surrounding streets are closed and motorist are encouraged to avoid the area.

The tractor-trailer's driver was rushed to Christianna Hospital in serious condition after being rescued from the crushed cab.

Debris was scattered all over the area, and hazardous materials were called in to clean up fuel from the spill.

Early reports are that the gate train crossing came down, and the driver tried to reverse then rolled forward before being struck by the train.

This crossing has had its share of crashes involving trains, FOX 29's Omari Fleming reported from the scene.

In fact, the crossing was the focus of a FOX 29 report earlier this year after a nearby business owner passed along surveillance video footage of several collisions. That business owner said he has seen 12 incidents, himself.

But witnesses say this is the worst collision at this crossing to date.
