Plane makes emergency landing over praying passenger

Posted: Updated:

A United Airlines flight from Denver landed safely in Washington, D.C., after its crew reported an emergency because a passenger began praying in an aisle.

NORAD says military jets were scrambled after the crew declared the emergency. The plane landed safely at Dulles International Airport.

The Denver TV station reports that the crew made the decision because a male passenger started praying in the middle of an aisle.

United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy says a passenger wasn't following flight attendant instructions for landing.

The flight in question was identified as Flight 662.

Passengers say the man was mumbling and then kneeled down in the aisle and started to pray.

A flight attendant reportedly held the man down in the aisle until the plane landed.

The unruly passenger was reportedly strapped down and taken away from the gate in a wheel chair.
