After Sandy: ways FEMA can help

Posted: Updated:
MYFOXNY.COM -

Federal disaster assistance is offered through the agency known as FEMA. Representatives are currently on the ground throughout the tristate region, going door-to-door meeting with home owners and offering assistance to people impacted by superstorm Sandy.

Mike Byrne, FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer, explained how the agency can help residents.

"FEMA is here to help you get back on your feet; offer temporary residence and temporary repairs," Byrne told Good Day New York on Thursday.

"If you suffered damage, call 1-800-621-FEMA (or visit dissasterassistance.gov)  and let the process decide if you get help," said Byrne.

In response to the high call volume in the aftermath of Sandy, FEMA hired 5,000 additional workers for the tristate region.

"If you have home owners insurance or flood insurance, make your first call to your insurance company. If that doesn't do it for you, then call us," added Byrne.

The monetary cap on FEMA assistance this year is $31,400. But you're not guaranteed money from FEMA.

"The insurance (company) has to document a loss. We'll send an inspector. Our turn around to get inspectors to your home is about 3 days. But some of the assistance can be pumped out right away, said Byrne, a native New Yorker and former FDNY firefighter.
