Many SI residents are not evacuating

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - Many residents in areas of Staten Island hit hard by Superstorm Sandy say they plan to weather the nor'easter in their battered and powerless homes.

Some tell the Staten Island Advance that they fear looting. Some feel they have nowhere else to go. Some figure Mother Nature has already dished out the worst.

There is no mandatory evacuation order. However, Borough President James P. Molinaro and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have urged people in areas already pummeled by Superstorm Sandy to evacuate before the new storm hits.

Molinaro said Tuesday that the area is in "very, very vulnerable condition."

Shuttle buses to Staten Island shelters will run on three routes from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
