Troy mayor who slurred gays, fought transit ousted

Posted: Updated:

TROY, Mich. (AP) -- A suburban Detroit mayor and tea party favorite who was criticized for an anti-gay slur and for opposing a largely federally funded transportation center has been recalled from office.

Troy residents voted 52 percent to 48 percent Tuesday to remove Mayor Janice Daniels as part-time leader of the city of 80,000.

With all 31 precincts reporting, the city says 20,763 people voted to recall Daniels, and 18,993 voted to retain her.

On Wednesday Acting City Manager Mike Culpepper said, "the people I've spoken with this morning, they believe the drama is probably going to end now that the mayor has been recalled."

Daniels was elected last year. Critics have attacked her sexual politics and her resistance to the transit center. They also accuse her of forcing out City Manager John Szerlag and embarrassing the city.

Daniels says she'd broken no laws and says voters are more upset with her style than her views.
