HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -

Democratic congressman Chris Murphy has defeated pro wrestling magnate Linda McMahon in Connecticut's bruising race for the Senate.

The three-term congressman won despite being outspent heavily by McMahon, the former CEO of the company once known as World Wresting Entertainment.

The 39-year-old Murphy represents northwestern Connecticut in Congress. He hammered McMahon as a pretender on abortion rights and accused the Republican of trying to buy the election.

It was the second defeat in two years for McMahon, who lost a Senate race to Democrat Richard Blumenthal in 2010. She spent nearly $100 million from her personal fortune on the two races combined.

Murphy will succeed the retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.
