Are you still in the dark even if your utility restored power to your area? It could actually be your responsibility.
If equipment in your home or on your property is damaged, the property owner (you or your landlord if you are a renter) may be responsible for getting it fixed.
If equipment that is your responsibility is indeed damaged, you may have to contact a licensed electrician to fix it before your utility will restore power.
For example, if you are a LIPA customer, the company says "Most of the equipment required for the electrical attachment on the side of a building is the property owner's responsibility" such as the point where the wire from an electric pole attaches to the building. That is considered part of the home's wiring.
If the damage isn't too severe, LIPA crews may try a temporary fix until you can call in an electrician. But if the damage is bad, you'll have to do that first before service can be turned back on.
In general, the utility must maintain the service line and meter. But the homeowner is responsible for the entrance cable, point of attachment, and meter pan.
Check with your utility for specific details on your service and equipment.
