CHICAGO (November 3, 2012) – Senior Ben Averkamp produced 22 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three assists to lead Loyola University Chicago to a 61-46 victory over Ferris State, a NCAA Division II squad, in an exhibition contest this afternoon at Gentile Arena. Loyola used a 20-2 run midway through the second half to blow the game open.
The Ramblers spread the ball around early as five players scored as part of a game-opening 11-2 run. A basket by Jeff White, which was followed by a three-pointer from Averkamp, turned a five-point game into a 20-10 Loyola lead, its largest of the half, with just over eight minutes remaining.
Ferris State tightened up on defense and Kenny Brown's three-pointer ignited a 13-2 Bulldog surge that gave the visitors a 23-22 advantage with 4:45 remaining in the period. The teams would exchange leads for the next few minutes before a bucket by Drew Lehman with 52 seconds left knotted the score at 27, which is where it stood as the teams headed to the locker room for intermission.
Loyola opened the second half by scoring eight unanswered points, two on a lay-up by ChristianThomas, followed by back-to-back three-pointers from Joe Crisman and Jordan Hicks. Ferris State quickly cut that deficit in half, but a lay-up by Averkamp at the 11:35 mark kicked off the game-changing 20-2 run that was punctuated by a jumper from Jeremy King. During that stretch, Loyola held the Bulldogs scoreless for 7:19 before Bryant Orange's free throw halted the FSU dry spell.
Averkamp hit 9 of 13 shots from the field, including both of his three-point attempts, en route to a game-high 22 points. Eleven Ramblers scored at least two points, with Thomas chipping in seven points and nine rebounds and Hicks adding five points, nine boards, three assists and a pair of steals.
Kenny Brown led Ferris State with a team-best 15 points.
Loyola opens the 2012-13 regular season next Friday (Nov. 9) when it hosts Toledo at 7 p.m.
