Brooklyn, Queens and LI residents spend day assessing damage

MYFOXNY.COM -

So many people are having a hard time coping with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Home and physical belonging that hold so many memories are now lost.

Bill Bowden of Far Rockaway works in tandem with his family and friends. For now, what makes up their basic day-to-day existence is in the back of a U-Haul truck and the courtesy of neighbors on Long Island.

I couldn't do it without them and the Fire Dept. in Massapequa, they helped in getting all this stuff out," said Bowden.

Residents of Queens and other areas recovering from Hurricane Sandy spend another day reassessing their homes, their possessions – their lives.

Theresa Morgan of Canarsie, Brooklyn goes through garbage bags that now hold her clothes.

Next door, neighbor Anthony Thomas is coping as well -- still haunted by memories from Monday night when rushing water burst through his basement door.

"When I saw the water burst in, I just ran up the stairs," said Thomas.

Similar scene like this also played out in Long Beach, Long Island where power outages remain a problem and sidewalks now lay home to what was once prized and dear.

Deciding what had to be thrown out can shake even the toughest man to his core. Just ask one flood victim Fox 5 spoke with.

"I was going through some things; it just brought me to tears," said Mark Di Santo.
