More weekend patrols in light of shooting spree

Posted: Updated:

MASON, Mich. (AP) -- Football fans traveling for a Michigan State game can expect to see more police along the Interstate 96 corridor where there have been 24 shootings.

Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth says drivers are more likely to get in an accident than get shot. Nonetheless, he's boosting patrols Saturday just in case.

There have been 24 shootings and one injury reported since Oct. 16, in Oakland, Livingston, Shiawassee and Ingham counties. Only three shootings have occurred on Interstate 96. There have been no arrests.

State police are checking a man's claim that a trooper pulled him over Monday on U.S. 23 and threatened to kill him if he didn't show his hands. Kim Sachs of Freeland tells Mlive.com that he believes it was part of the shootings investigation.
