Woman pleads guilty in Phoenix fake coupon ring

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A woman arrested in a Phoenix police investigation into a fake coupon ring has pleaded guilty to counterfeiting.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 54-year-old Marilyn Johnson changed her plea at a court hearing Thursday. She's scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 1.

Johnson, Robin Ramirez, and Amiko Fountain, were arrested in the case in July. All three originally pleaded not guilty to felony charges of illegal control of an enterprise, forgery, counterfeit marking and engaging in a fraudulent scheme.

Police say they seized more than $25 million worth of fake coupons and $2 million in other assets from the women's Phoenix-area homes.

They say 1 of the suspects bought counterfeit manufacturer coupons overseas and sold them online. Johnson and the third suspect were accused of helping operate the site and shipping the coupons.
