It wasn't exactly a trick, but a Cobb County woman gave kids a civics test before handing out treats on Wednesday.
Kayla Taylor had trick or treaters recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Older kids then had to answer a couple of questions about American history before receiving candy.
"If you live here, you should at least know it, and the basic American history, you should know as well," said Taylor. "This isn't a political statement as much as it is a patriotic statement. You know, let's remember where we are, how we got here, why we got here and that we should be grateful to still have all of the freedoms that we have."
Some kids knew they'd have to recite the pledge. Some said they'd practiced it because they really wanted the treat – a movie theater-sized candy car.
Parents said they liked the idea.
"I think it's a neat idea to promote patriotism within the country and with the kids and give them some education and earn their chocolates," said Aaron Sommers.
Taylor said that she did have consolation candy for those who missed questions or couldn't recite the pledge.
Some of the littlest ones may have needed a little coaching, but Taylor said she was proud of all of them.
Taylor says one of her favorite trick or treaters was a 5-year-old. After he recited the pledge, he turned the table on her and asked her who wrote it. Even Taylor was stumped. The answer? Francis Bellamy wrote the pledge in 1892.
