Massive storm Sandy quiets Boston's Logan airport

Posted: Updated:

BOSTON (AP) — Hurricane Sandy had nearly shut down Boston's Logan International Airport on Monday, hours before the worst of the storm was expected to hit.

Just a handful of flights remained on as scheduled, and ticket agents seemed to outnumber customers at Terminal A.

Passengers were glued to cell phones as they pulled suitcases and checked out the long list of cancellations on video screens.

Truck driver Shawn Hartman was among those making alternate plans after a canceled flight. He dropped off a load of new trucks at a local dealership, then hopped a bus and train hoping to catch the flight home Monday, only to learn that wasn't happening.

The earliest he'll be out is Wednesday, but he said he was resigned to the wait, figuring it's better than flying in dangerous conditions.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
