New York Downtown Hospital was evacuated Sunday due to the threat of power loss in the area.
The decision was announced by President Jeffrey Menkes in consultation with State Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah who said the hospital has evacuated all patients currently being cared for at the hospital in an orderly manner to appropriate alternative settings.
The hospital, which is located near Wall Street and the Financial District, City Hall and the Brooklyn Bridge, is the only hospital serving the downtown community below East 14th Street.
Commissioner Shah and Mr. Menkes decided to move the hospital's patients because Con Edison cannot commit to providing steam and electrical power to the area of lower Manhattan during the coming storm.
Ambulances transported the patients and their families from the hospital's Gold Street emergency entrance to other facilities, most to hospitals within the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System.
Hospital staff was called in and those already at the hospital were held over to help with the evacuation. Employees, department heads and members of administration all assisted in the smooth evacuation process.
All patients were safely evacuated and at the receiving hospitals by this afternoon.
