NYC braces for Hurricane Sandy

MYFOXNY.COM -

City officials and the Office of Emergency Management are closely monitoring the storm and making preparations for a worst-case scenario.

The city has yet to order any evacuations and Mayor Bloomberg says the biggest threat posed by Hurricane Sandy is the possibility of a record storm surge – and Lower Manhattan would be most vulnerable.

One Battery Park resident, who was buying batteries and milk, was asked if she was worried.

"No, not really, but I still have to plan," said the resident.

There was a steady stream of customers at grocery stores in Battery Park city tonight ahead of Sandy's arrival.

Tonight Mayor Bloomberg urged New Yorkers to do just that: stay inside once the storm hits.

"Don't be fooled by what you see tomorrow, the damage could be much worse," said Mayor Bloomberg.

At a press conference Saturday evening, Mayor Bloomberg said as of now, schools and city offices will be open Monday although the final decision on both will be made tomorrow afternoon.

  • Some closings the Mayor did mention:
  • City parks will close at 5pm Sunday
  • East River Ferry closed Sunday
  • Staten Island Ferry will operate on delay

"We expect it to be not as bad as tropical storm, but there will be a lot of water," said Bloomberg.

No evacuations have been ordered yet for now but the mayor said if there are any residents particularly concerned about flooding the city will have 65 shelters open beginning Sunday at 9:00 am.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
