TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Gov. Chris Christie is taking steps to lower some New Jersey reservoirs as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the state.

The governor has directed four reservoir systems in the northern part of the state to be drawn down beginning Friday night.

Those include the Woodcliff Lake-Lake Tappan-Oradell Reservoir system in Bergen County; the Charlottesburg Reservoir; the Wanaque Reservoir and the Boonton Reservoir.

The governor says a drawdown of Pompton Lake and Lake Hopatcong will be done on Saturday.

Christie says opening the floodgates will help mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall associated with the storm.
