The long escalator in the middle of the platform at the 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue station that was just reopened after six years is broken again.
Escalator No. 254 is privately maintained by the owners of the Lipstick Building, at East 53rd Street and Third Avenue. In 1985 the then-owners received city variances for extra floors in exchange for maintaining the escalator that leads to the building. When the building owners went bankrupt the escalator never got repaired.
The new owners, IRSA Developers from Argentina, spent $1 million to repair the escalator.
But on Friday the handrail jammed and would not move, an unsafe condition with moving steps, experts say.
A manager for the Lipstick Building said this is a temporary setback as the kinks are worked out for the first month of operations and will be repaired by next week.
The MTA has said the escalator is too old and should have been replaced instead of repaired.
The MTA has problems at this station, too. One of its escalators was not working on Friday, either.

The van rear-ended a Taxi and Limousine Commission vehicle at the corner of Church Ave. and Utica Ave. at about 7:45 a.m., said police. One of the pedestrians that was struck by the van was taken to Brookdale Hospital. Four other victims were taken to Kings County Hospital.
