NEW YORK (AP) -

A New York City police officer who was shot in the chest as he broke up a robbery while off-duty has been released from the hospital to cheers.

Officer Ivan Marcano had one hand on his chest wound and the other on his gun when he fatally shot Prince James, 18, of the Bronx, Wednesday evening. He was released on Friday, and thousands of officers in uniform cheered him from the street.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly promoted Marcano to detective at his hospital bed.

He was expected to recover fully. The off-duty officer had identified himself while breaking up the robbery. The victim was pistol-whipped and had $80 stolen.

Two other suspects, a 17-year-old and a 20-year-old, were arrested Friday on charges of attempted murder and assault.
