NEW YORK (AP) -- Police say firefighters responding to a blaze in the Bronx found a woman dead with multiple stab wounds and a 1-year-old child who was pulled from the flames but later died.

The 32-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 3034 Albany Crescent. Police say she was found on her bed under a burning mattress.

The child was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center where she died. The cause of her death has not been determined. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the child had no stab wounds.

Fire officials say the fire was reported just after 7 p.m. Thursday and was brought under control about a half hour later.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
