CLAYTON, N.J. -

Parents in Clayton, New Jersey are only left with questions a day after learning about the killing of 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale.

Some parents told Fox 29's Stephanie Salvatore they feel their security in Clayton has been taken away.

many are still in shock that something like this would happen in their own hometown.

Other parents, such as Eric Sabo, have changed their daily routines. Sabo says he no longer allows his seven and 10-year-old children walk to school alone.

The parents of Pasquale told the Associated Press on Wednesday that Autumn was "a tough girl, a tough cookie."

Her parents said they felt like she was treated "like a piece of trash."

A memorial continues to grow at the location where the recycling bin was left that contained her body.

Grief counselors were on hand for students at Clayton middle and high schools, where many returned to class after taking some days off.

The district's superintendent tells Fox 29 that students and faculty are trying to take everything one day at a time.
