ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A St. Paul police officer is recovering from a gunshot wound suffered in a shootout with a home burglar late Tuesday night. The suspect who fired at the officer is dead.

At about 11 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul police officer Daniel King and his partner were helping other officers respond to a report of a man taking a shotgun and compound bow from a home on the 1100 block of Flandrau Street. Just after 11:30 p.m., the two officers saw a man matching the thief's description carrying a long gun in a parking lot behind 720 Payne Avenue.

The officers drove a marked squad into the parking lot to investigate when the suspect fired at the car, wounding King. The officers returned fire, killing 22-year-old Chue Xiong of St. Paul.

King underwent surgery at Regions Hospital, and he is now described as doing well.

Tuesday night's shooting is not connected to the traffic stop shooting of a drug investigation suspect on Jessamine Avenue earlier in the day
