NEW YORK (AP) - A new study shows that New York City's pedestrian plazas and protected bike lanes are a boon for business.
The Department of Transportation study shows that retail sales jumped 172% three years after the very first pedestrian plaza opened in Brooklyn's Dumbo section.
On Pearl Street in Manhattan's Financial District, sales during peak seasons increased 14% in stores along a mini plaza.
The DOT said three years after the project was completed, shops along the route of the protected bike lane on Ninth Avenue between 23rd and 31st streets saw a 49% increase in retail sales.
