Funeral for highway patrolman killed on LIE

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of police officers lined the streets outside St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, for the funeral of a highway patrolman.

Nassau County Police Officer Joseph Olivieri died last Thursday morning while responding to a multi-car crash on the Long Island Expressway.

He had gotten out of his patrol car at the crash scene when he was struck by a Cadillac Escalade SUV that also hit a Toyota that been involved in the earlier crash.

The driver of the Toyota, James Ryan, of Oakdale, was allegedly drunk when he crashed into one car, kept going, and then hit another car.

Ryan now faces vehicular manslaughter and other charges. He is free on bond.

The driver of the SUV that slammed into Olivieri was not charged. He told cops that he didn't see the disabled Toyota until seconds before the collision because it was perpendicular to the road and its lights were not visible.

Olivieri was a 13-year veteran of the Nassau Police Department.
