Thousands of survivors and participants from the tri-state area and across the country took part in the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer early Saturday morning.

The participants had to raise $1,800 to walk. The Avon Walks offer participants a choice of walking a marathon (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over the weekend.

The Avon Foundation will distribute the money to local, regional and national breast cancer organizations to help fund research and care services.

Part two of the walk takes place tomorrow with closing ceremonies at Hudson River Park's Pier 84.
