Broadway filled with skateboarders despite a judge’s ban

Thousands of skateboarders who were banned by a NYC judge showed up for the annual Broadway race on Saturday.

The event called the Broadway Bomb would have taken place Saturday but a court banned the race. That didn't stop about 2,000 skateboarders from showing up despite the heavy police presence.

Officers were out in full force at West 116th Street where the race would have started to make sure the participants didn't defy the court order canceling the eight-mile race.

Police played warnings over a loudspeaker and placed orange nets to block intersections. They did allow some groups of skateboarders to go around the barricades to head downtown.

No arrests were made.

Last year, around 1,000 people rode their skateboards from West 116th all the way to Wall Street. This year, the city got a judge to issue an order blocking the event saying it was unsafe.

Despite the order, participants said they were going to race anyway.
