MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York driver arrested on vehicular manslaughter, DWI and other charges in a series of crashes that killed a highway patrolman has been freed on bond.

The attorney for James Ryan, 25, of Oakdale, said his client posted $120,000 bond. He didn't enter a plea during his arraignment.

Ryan was involved in the crashes early Thursday on the Long Island Expressway. Officer Joseph Olivieri, a 13-year veteran of the Nassau police force, was killed when he was struck and killed by the driver of an SUV. That driver has not been charged.

Ryan's attorney said he will investigate whether there is legal precedent for his client to be charged with manslaughter in this case.

Other charges include reckless endangerment and possession of a controlled substance. Davis said Ryan had a prescription for the drug Adderall.
