A customs officer at JFK inspecting a traveler's luggage found a heroin inside blue jeans, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The traveler, Andy Diaz of the Bronx, had arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on October 12, 2012.

A Customs and Border Protection officer found several pairs of jeans inside Diaz's luggage that were unusually heavy and thick, according to CBP. A closer inspection revealed a tan powder sewn into the jeans' pockets, authorities said.

The two pounds of power tested positive for heroin, CBP said.

"This seizure demonstrates that drug smugglers will go to any extreme to get their product into the United States," said Robert Perez, the director of New York Field Operations. "CBP officers are on the forefront of preventing that from occurring."

Officers arrested Diaz and turned him over to agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Diaz faces federal narcotics smuggling charges and will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the U.S. Eastern District of New York, based in Brooklyn.

CBP said the seized heroin has a wholesale value of about $65,000.
