A statue honoring the soldiers who rode on horseback into battle in Afghanistan following the 9/11 terror attacks wil be placed on the grounds of the World Trade Center site.
The rededication of the statue took place place Friday near the PATH station entrance before it is moved to its permanent home closer on the WTC grounds.
It may be hard to believe that U.S. soldiers on horeseback paved the way in the Afghanistan War, but its something they never want you to forget.
Military and political officials gathered to welcome the statue to Lower Manhattan to honor the special ops forces had no choice but to travel the old-fashioned way into Afghanistan as the U.S. prepared for war in late 2001.
Only one of the soldiers had ever even been on horseback before. But they managed to navigate the rough terrain and their accomplish their mission to a tee.
The statue was paid for with $750,000 in private donations. Then the state signed off on its final home: the World Trade Center site.
Good Day New York spoke with Lt. Gen. John Mulholland, Veterans Advocate Bill White and Chief Warrant Officer 5 Alan Mack prior to the dedication ceremony.
"In the immediate aftermath, this Special Forces group immediately deployed to Uzbekistan. Eleven years ago tonight, the special forces team were met by their Afghan counterparts with horses and they saddled up that night began their fight against the Taliban," Lt. Gen. Mulholland told GDNY.
