Skip Alex Cross, but Smashed and The Sessions are definite winners: Zwecker

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX Chicago entertainment reported Bill Zwecker joined Good Day to tell viewers which movies to see or skip this weekend, from "Alex Cross" to "Smashed" to "The Sessions."

Among the new choices this weekend are two very different films, beginning with Tyler Perry shedding his iconic "Madea" female character for a very masculine crime-fighter in "Alex Cross."

Much has been made about how Tyler Perry has re-shaped his body and got in shape to play the title character in "Alex Cross," as the psychologist-slash-homicide detective based on the mega-best-selling James Patterson novels.

While Perry does his best to tackle the job, unfortunately I kept remembering how great Morgan Freeman handled this role. This so-called action thriller is actually a terribly made dud of a movie.

It's totally predictable - you can practically say the lines before the actors do. It's a big waste of the talent Perry, Edward Burns and Matthew Fox bring to the game. Fox plays the serial killer-villain.

Please save your money and skip this mess.

"Smashed" also opens this weekend. Films about alcoholism are usually deeply depressing, but while there certainly are some pretty dramatic moments in "Smashed" - this film about addiction is actually quite uplifting.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who delivers a huge star turn in this film, plays lead character Kate. She's a young married woman whose drinking overtakes her, threatens her job as a school teacher and sends her to alcoholics anonymous to get sober.

"Smashed" sensitively takes audiences on that AA journey, and helps Kate finally face some long-troubling issues regarding her mother. The film also uncovers whether her marriage is built on love -- or just a mutual, booze-fueled attempt to avoid life.

This is an excellent, intelligent ,"R" rated film, for mature audiences due to the subject matter.

Oscar winner Helen Hunt will be in town this weekend, to be honored by the Chicago International Film Festival.

She stars in the new movie "The Sessions," about a man in an iron lung who attempts to have a sexual life.

The film also stars John Hawkes, who we recently chatted with here in Chicago. FOX Chicago News asked what it was like to get naked with Helen Hunt in this movie.

"The Sessions" opens in Chicago next Friday, and I'll review it then.
