Oakland Co. affected for the first time by Meningitis outbreak

Posted: Updated:

The number of fungal meningitis cases in the state of Michigan climbed to 44 on Wednesday with four other non-meningitis infection cases related to the same contaminated steroids.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the total of 48 infections in the state was an increase of 20 from one week ago. Michigan's death toll remains at four while nationally 247 have been sickened by the injections and 19 have died.

A steroid made by the New England Compounding Center, a Massachusetts pharmacy, has been tied to the national outbreak of the rare form of meningitis. Most of the patients contracted the infection after getting shots for back pain over the past few months. Two developed infections from joint injections.

For the first time Oakland County is also reporting the county is being affected by the outbreak. Kathy Forzley, Health Officer for the Oakland County Health Division tells theoaklandpress.com two unidentified patients have been confirmed to have fungal meningitis. No further information was released about those patients.

Doctors say those who believe they might have received a tainted injection should go and see their healthcare provider.
