Derek Jeter has decided to undergo surgery to repair the fracture in his left ankle, a Yankees spokesman said in a statement.

The 38-year-old Yankee captain and start shortstop was hurt while fielding a grounder in the 12th inning of Game 1 of the ALCS at Yankee Stadium, a game that stretched into early Sunday.

The operation is scheduled for October 20 in Charlotte, N.C., according to Jason Latimer, the assistant director of media and player relations for the Yankees. The surgeon will be Dr. Robert Anderson, a foot and ankle specialist.

Jeter's recovery could take four to five months.
