Teacher banned from ever teaching in NYC

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A popular history teacher has been banned from ever teaching in New York City after pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 17-year-old student.

According to a report by the special schools investigator, Raemon Matthews took racy photographs of the girl in a locked classroom of the Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School in the Bronx.

He was also accused of inappropriately touching her during the 2008-2009 school year.

The report said Matthews convinced the girl to pose for the photos by telling her she needed a portfolio for college.

Matthews pleaded guilty to sex abuse earlier this year and resigned in April.

The Department of Education said Matthews has been barred from ever teaching in the city again.

His attorney said the plea satisfied all sides.
