After growing the heaviest pumpkin ever on Long Island in 2007 that weighed 1,249, Scott Armstrong beat his own record by growing one weighing in at 1,279 pounds.

Armstrong, from Commack, won first place honors for the third consecutive year in the annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off at Hicks Nurseries in Westbury.

He started growing pumpkins in 1998 and says has dreamed of growing an enormous pumpkin since he was a child.

The Guinness Book of World Records says Armstrong still has a couple hundred pounds to go to break the all-time record, which weighed 1,810 pounds and 8 ounces in 2010. That pumpkin was presented by Chris Stevens at the Stillwater Harvest Fest in Stillwater, Minn., according to the Guinness Book website.

Armstrong also grows sunflowers, tomatoes and peanuts.
