A new class of firefighters in Newark is comprised of veterans for the first since World War II.

The G.I. Go Fund helped recruit the veterans where 28 of the 31 new firemen are made up of servicemen.

The veterans made phone calls, sent emails and held career fairs and said the military experience they had made their 12-week training period very competitive.

Last month the unemployment rate for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was nearly two percent higher than the national average.

There's a new plan across the country to hire veterans when they return home.

"It's the exact same personality that will see a building on fire and say ‘I'll go in, give me a hose, give me the ladder – I'll run in,'" said Jack Fanous, Executive Director of the G.I. Go Fund.

New Jersey, New York, Washington State and Massachusetts all give veterans preference in their civil exams.
