EVESHAM TWP., N.J. -

It's a bizarre mystery: a hit-and-run accident, but this time police know who the driver is, but can't find the victim.

Evesham Township Police still have not been able to figure out where exactly the accident happened, or where the victim might be.  They've checked local hospitals and missing persons reports.

Obviously, the more time that passes, the more likely this victim may not survive.

A photo of the vehicle shows where someone's head struck the windshield of the car Tuesday night.  The impact left behind hair and blood amid the shattered glass, and certainly appears to indicate the victim suffered a severe head injury.

Dr. Pete Curreri told Fox 29, based on his experience, the "person most likely would have been unconscious.  It depends on how fast he was going.  But the person most likely could be deceased."

But police cannot find a body anywhere, despite an intensive search that's now stretching past two days.

If the victim did survive the impact, he or she desperately needs medical attention.

"We're very concerned," Sgt. Joe Friel of the Evesham Township Police Department told Fox 29.

"That's why we're out there around the clock, still searching."

The driver of the car, an 81-year-old man with a valid license, cannot remember where the accident happened.  Evesham police pulled him over on East Main Street near Knox Boulevard in Marlton, after they spotted the damage to his car.

Investigators say he didn't realize he had hit someone.

"He knew he hit something," Sgt. Friel said.  "He said it was probably 15 minutes prior to us stopping him.  So he's giving us a time of around 8 o'clock.  He said that he got out, he checked, but couldn't locate anything, and then he drove off."

Police describe the driver as "confused," and say he's been of limited help.  He told them the accident may have happened on Route 70, as he drove home from the Cherry Hill Mall.  But police are wondering why no one would have seen the accident or spotted the victim on such a busy road.

"Where they at? Tisheena Jackson of Sicklerville, N.J., wondered.  "Like, where is the person at?  The person has to be somewhere!  I hope they come forward, and I hope they're okay, I really do."

The driver had his iPad with him, so police are now checking to see if it pinged a location to a nearby cell tower.  They're also still looking for witnesses, so if you saw an accident in the area of Evesham Township, involving a 1997 blue Ford Taurus, some time between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday night, please call police.
