The father of Yankees manager Joe Girardi has died, according the Yankees. He was 81.
Jerry Girardi, who had Alzheimer's disease, passed away on Saturday at a nursing home in Illinois on Saturday, October 6, according to a team statement.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and later worked in construction sales and as a bricklayer, the statement said.
A viewing will be held in Peoria, Ill., on Sunday followed by a funeral mass and burial on Monday, the Yankees said. Peoria is Joe Girardi's hometown.
Joe Girardi will go ahead and manage the Yankees in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles, scheduled for Thursday night, according to New York Post columnist Joel Sherman.
The Yankees will observe a moment of silence for Jerry Girardi prior to the game, the Yankees said.
