ATLANTA -

Crews reopened the Martin Luther King, Jr Boulevard bridge in downtown Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon. The bridge had been closed for nearly a full day after a fire on Tuesday.

The bridge, located between Mitchell Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive, was closed to morning commuters as the city tried to figure out how extensive the damage was and whether it weakened the bridge.

The blaze reportedly started at a homeless camp located under the overpass near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Mangum Street on Tuesday afternoon. Both MLK and Mangum were closed until fire crews were able to put out the blaze.

Cadaver dogs were also called in to the area because it is a place where homeless people sleep.  The dogs were being used as a precaution, according to fire officials, as no one had been reported missing.

One group of engineers has already examined the damage to concrete structure. Another group of experts from the Department of Transportation checked the steel structure of the bridge to see if it was safe.

"There is concrete that has fallen off the bottom of the bridge, and if you look up under the bridge, the main beams have cross members.  Some of the cross members, there was enough heat that it caused those to warp," said Assistant Fire Chief Steven Woodworth of the Atlanta Police Department.

The bridge reopened around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Officials said there was still some work that will need to be done over the next few days.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
