Poll predicts Detroit to lose 40% of residents within five years

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (MyFoxDetroit) -
A
comprehensive poll has concluded 40% of Detroit
residents will move out within the next five years. That totals to about 300,000
people – leaving Detroit
with a population of less than 500,000.
The
poll was commissioned by The Detroit News and funded by the Thompson Foundation.
800 residents were contacted by phone last month, asked to share their feelings
on Detroit's
leadership, schools, transportation, quality of life, and overall optimism of
the city.
The
results?
66%
of people say the city is on the wrong track
58%
say crime is the biggest challenge
13%
say unemployment or the economy is the biggest challenge
51%
would live in another city if they could
40%
plan to leave the city within five years
57%
of those planning to leave are families with children
Back
from 2000 to 2010 the city lost a quarter of its residents, averaging about one
person lost every 22 minutes.
