Man who died on Conn. highway was headed for vacation

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The daughter of a Maryland man who fell to his death after trying to help an accident victim in Connecticut said he was on his way to Maine to relax and maybe hunt.

Diane Campbell told The Hartford Courant that her father, Richard Herron, was running a soybean, wheat and corn farm at age 83. She called him a fit 83-year-old man.

Herron, of Elkton, Md., died Monday when he fell 35 feet from an elevated highway as he tried to help a driver whose SUV had rolled.

Troopers say he jumped over the center median of Interstate 84 in Hartford to avoid a tractor-trailer nearing the accident scene. Police say Herron probably didn't realize there was a large drop.

Authorities say the SUV's driver lost control of her vehicle.
