No sign of meningitis among New York patients

Three clinics in New York used the recalled steroid that has been linked to a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak: one in Rochester, one in Mount Vernon, and one in Mineola. While there have been no reported cases of fungal meningitis in New York, doctors and health officials are still watching carefully.

Back on September 26, the administrator at the Action Sports Medicine and Pain Management clinic got a call from the New England Compounding Center. He was told to immediately stop giving out a common steroid used for back pain. His office had administered that steroid to 17 people in the five days before.

The medical practice contacted all 17 patients injected with this steroid and made sure they were OK. So far, no one has shown up with any signs of meningitis: no fever, dizziness, or headaches. But the incubation period is a couple of days to a month.

Health officials say that nationwide as many as 13,000 patients got the steroid in question, but it is not clear how many could get sick.

Last Thursday, the FDA came to Mineola to pick up the clinic's 26 unused vials of steroid.

Action Sports Medicine and Pain Management said it is cooperating with the CDC, the FDA and the state's Department of Health and following their lead in what it should be doing.

The doctor at the Mount Vernon said he contacted all of his patients who had gotten back injections and said they are OK.
