Elderly Woman Has Tree Growing In Bathroom

Posted: Updated:
West Philadelphia -

Anna Cummings of West Philadelphia says she's doing the best she can with a massive tree edging its way inside the wall of her house on North 54th Street.

"The tree is inside the wall," she told FOX29 when we came out to examine the damage.
She tried to block the cracks and holes with tarp and boards, but the damage is worsening.

The same tree has pushed its way through the floor of her upstairs bathroom.  It also caused cracks along the bathroom wall, making the ceiling crumble.

She said the problem started about a year ago.

Cummings and her son say they called Philadelphia's 311 program for help.  She said she was told it would be her problem to fix.

Cummings lives on a fixed income and does not have the estimated $4,000 to remove the tree, let alone fix the damage.

FOX29 contacted city officials about the matter since the family filed a report with 311.

They confirm it is the homeowner's responsibility, however they suggested Cummings pursue a home improvement loan to finance the repairs.

Her family says that may be difficult given already tight finances.  They are hoping someone can help them out. FOX29 will keep you updated on their progress.

It was a gloomy Sunday as the whole area remain socked in with low clouds & fog, drizzle and scattered showers.

The weather remains unsettled through most of the work week. The difference is that it will really warm up -- temperatures soar into the 80s by Tuesday.  That mild and humid air mass will fuel afternoon thunderstorms.

By Thursday a cold front moves by bringing more rain.  It will also bring drier and cooler weather by Friday as we finally clear out.
