Friends to have fundraiser for Army Guardsman in police shooting

MYFOXNY.COM -

The friends of the Army National Guardsman who was shot and killed by a detective during a traffic stop in Queens, will raise money to help his family pay for his funeral Sunday.

The Tavern Lounge on Jamaica Avenue in Woodhaven will host the event for 22-year-old Noel Polanco. Polanco's friends say he was a member of an auto club named the Center of Attention and hope to raise enough money to cover the expense.

Police pulled over Polanco on the Grand Central Parkway near LaGuardia Airport as he drove two co-workers home early Thursday morning. Police said Polanco was weaving in-and-out of traffic. Detective Hassan Hamdy shot Polanco who had allegedly failed to keep his hands on the steering wheel and reached underneath his seat.

Dianne Di Ferrari, who was sitting in the front seat, said Polanco never took his hands off the wheel.

Prior to the fundraiser, there will be a vigil at the Ice Lounge in Astoria where Polanco and Di Ferrari work and were last seen before driving off to head home.
