Sharpton vows to help mother of police shooting victim

The Rev. Al Sharpton held a press conference Saturday to support the mother of a National Guardsman shot to death by a NYPD officer and call for justice.

22-year-old Noel Polanco was unarmed when he was shot Thursday morning after police pulled him over for a traffic violation on the Grand Central Parkway near LaGuardia Airport.

Police have offered no explanation for why a detective fired after approaching the car.

Cecilia Reyes, Polanco's mother, cried on the shoulder of Sharpton at his National Action Network headquarters in Harlem. Reyes and Sharpton say Polanco did nothing to provoke the police and they won't rest until the detective is brought to justice.

Sharpton said its "unthinkable for a mother to have to bury her child," and that "for unarmed innocent people to be killed is wrong and it's got to stop."

The detective who shot Polanco claims he was reaching for something under his car seat.

We're not anti-police, her son wanted to be a policeman," said Shapton. "We're anti-wrong. And for an unarmed, innocent person to be killed is wrong, and it's got to stop."
