MYFOXNY.COM -

Central Queens Academy is a new public charter middle school serving 110 fifth grade students. It is the first charter school in the city's most overcrowded district, which is home to Elmhurst, Woodside and Corona.

The academy's mission is to build a nurturing but rigorous school culture of college and career readiness for recent immigrant youth and English language learners.

Reporter Tai Hernandez visited the school, which has been open for 30 days, for a special ribbon-cutting event with Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott and other officials.

"We are excited to welcome Chancellor Walcott to our school," CQA Principal Jesse Tang said in a statement in advance of the event. "Our students and teachers have been working very hard in our first few weeks as a school, and I am looking forward to showing the Chancellor some of their great work."

Central Queens Academy is located at 55-30 Junction Boulevard in Elmhurst.
