John Fanning arrested after assault estranged wife

BUFORD, Ga -

The son of a former Gwinnett County commissioner sentenced last month on public corruption and drug charges was arrested Friday after getting into a physical altercation.

Authorities say John Fanning, 34, of Dacula, showed up at his estranged wife's house located in the 3000 block of Bold Spring Road in Buford around 11 a.m. Friday, violating her protection order against him. A spokesperson for the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office tells FOX 5 News that Fanning assaulted his wife with a table leg in front of their children.

Members of the SWAT unit found Fanning in the woods near the home and was taken into custody. They say he will face charges stemming from the altercation and violation of that protection order. He was taken to the Gwinnett County Jail.

Fanning along with his mother Shirley Lasseter and their 65-year-old associate, Carl "Skip" Cain, of Flowery Branch, pled guilty to charges stemming from scheme to sell the commissioner's vote on a proposed real estate development project. Fanning and Cain were both sentenced to our years and nine months in prison. Lasseter was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

Officials say Fanning had yet reported to service his sentence, but as wearing an ankle monitor as a condition of his release.

Fanning faces addition charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, cruelty to children, and obstruction after Friday's incident.

No word on the condition of Fanning's estranging wife.
