MASSAPEQUA PARK, N.Y. (AP) - A funeral has been scheduled for the Nassau County Legislature's presiding officer.

Peter Schmitt died Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack during a meeting in the county executive's office. He was 62.

Schmitt represented the Massapequa area in the county Legislature for nine 2-year terms.

He was a conservative Republican and staunch anti-tax advocate.

A wake will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Massapequa Funeral Home in Massapequa Park. A funeral Mass will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church.

A special election will be scheduled to fill his unexpired term.

His death leaves the Legislature evenly split between nine Democrats and nine Republicans.
