Police: Mom run over trying to stop carjacking in Roseville

Posted: Updated:

ROSEVILLE, Mich. -- Roseville Police say a woman was getting ready to drop her boys at school Thursday morning.  She left them in the car while she went to grab something out of the house on Collingwood.  Seconds later, two men hopped into her 2009 Jeep Cherokee and took off with her 7 and 8-year-old boys in the back seat.

"The mother came out, saw them driving off with her kids and ran after the car and tried to stop them, and that's when she was struck and then subsequently run over," said Police Chief James Berlin.

It's believed the carjackers may not have realized the kids were in the car.  Witnesses say they saw the car coming down the street.  The two suspects bailed first, and then while the car was still moving, the kids got out of the vehicle that eventually lost control and crashed into a utility pole.

Witnesses also say they saw the suspects jump into a dark colored SUV and take off. They're only described as young black men wearing dark clothing.

"Looks like just a stolen car was the original intent gone almost critically awry here.  But the callousness of it, they could've easily put the car in park, jumped out and ran when the mother confronted them.  No, they run her over," the chief said.

The boys were able to run home.  They were not injured, but their 31-year-old mother is hurt.  She was rushed to the hospital.  We're told she suffered head and leg injuries. Berlin says as of 7 a.m. Friday, her condition has been upgraded to stable from critical.

If you have any information about this crime, you are asked to call police at 586-447-4483.
