Police: Baby dies after pit bull attack on Detroit's west side

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- Detroit police removed a 2-year-old brown and white pit bull from a deadly scene Thursday.  The dog, Cain, is a loved family pet, but police say for an unknown reason the pit bull attacked a 3-week-old baby girl, mauling her to death.

It happened around dinner time inside a home on Detroit's west side.

We've learned the baby's 24-year-old mother had been staying there with a friend after the birth of her daughter.  The newborn was in her car seat on the dining room floor sleeping after being fed when she was attacked.

There were two adults and two other older kids in the home at the time, but they couldn't save the infant.  The dog was just too powerful.

Detroit Police on the scene snapped pictures and collected evidence.  They seized the dog.  Its owner told police the family pet has never shown aggression towards people in the past, nor was the dog aggressive with officers.

After questioning the mother, Detroit Police say this appears to be a terrible tragedy and not neglect.

The investigation will continue, but at this time it does not appear as if any charges are going to be filed.
